At the invitation of Government of Riga Municipality, Suzhou Municipal Delegation led by Mr. Zhu Yongxin, Deputy Mayor of Suzhou, paid a friendly visit to Latvia from Nov. 7 to Nov. 10.
Riga, the capital of Latvia, is one of the most important ancient cities protected by World Heritage Committee of UNESCO and a friendly city of Suzhou. At the end of the Sept. 2007, a delegation led by Mr. Janis Birks, Mayor of Riga, visited Suzhou and IVT, and Mr. Birks sent a friendly invitation to President Shan Qiang. During the visit to Latvia, Suzhou Delegation inspected some education institutions and had a nice talk with the Mayor and officials of Riga. On Nov. 8, the delegation visited Riga Technical University and exchanged opinions on teacher training with Mr. Ivars Knets, President of Riga Technical University. The two parties shared a lot in common in teachers’ and students’ exchanges.
Riga Technical University, founded in 1862, consists of 8 departments with approximately 17,000 students. It offers not only courses ranging from Bachelor to Doctor programs, but vocational courses and overseas learning and internships. The meeting improved the understanding between the two parties and promotes the potentials for further cooperation.President Shan Qiang sent a piece of double-faced embroidery with typical Suzhou scenery on it to Mr. Ivars Knets, symbolizing a friendship bridge is being built between China and Latvia. On the evening of Nov. 9, Mr. Zhang Limin, Ambassador of P. R. China in Latvia held a banquet for the delegation. He fully affirmed the cooperation between IVT and Riga Technical University and he also stated that he will push the communication between the two colleges ahead.
